100 DAYS CLEW Independence

What happens when you ride a Step-In system for an entire season in all kinds of conditions? Dan, CLEW teamrider, spent around 100 days testing the CLEW Independence – from powder and backcountry riding to park laps and demanding carves. After such an intensive test period, his verdict is clear: For Dan, the Independence combines the familiar feel of a traditional snowboard binding with the convenience of a Step-In system.

Classic Binding Feel, Easy Entry

One of the biggest advantages for Dan is that the Independence feels like a traditional binding when riding. The toe strap and heel strap provide the familiar hold, while the mechanical mechanism makes getting in and out quick and easy.

The difference is especially noticeable on the lift: pull the lever, step out, ride away – and simply step back in for the next run. No sitting down and no messing around with your bindings. Another advantage: The Independence works with regular snowboard boots. There’s no need for a dedicated Step-In boot.

From Powder to Carving

Dan has put the system through a wide range of conditions. He was particularly impressed by its performance in powder. Even after a short hike through deep snow, he found it easy to step back into the binding without having to clear large amounts of snow first.

When it comes to jibbing and buttering, Dan especially appreciates the direct and responsive power transfer. Every movement of his foot is transferred immediately to the boot, binding and board. That direct response also comes into play when carving. The stiff binding gives him plenty of control and confidence – especially when the edges are digging deep into firm, grippy snow.

100 Days Later: Still Impressed

After around 100 days on the board, one thing is clear: For Dan, the convenience of the Step-In system has proven itself in everyday riding. It takes a few days to get used to the new way of getting in and out, but once you do, the system feels just as natural as a traditional binding. And that combination is what makes the difference for him: the familiar feel of a traditional binding combined with the speed and simplicity of a Step-In system.

Dan’s Verdict

After a full season, Dan’s verdict is clear: He doesn’t want to go back to a traditional binding system. The CLEW Independence 1.0 impressed him especially with its direct response, easy handling and quick entry – without sacrificing the familiar feel of a traditional snowboard binding.
